A martini glass filled with garnets and emeralds first whetted the creative appetite of Roland Madrid ’01 (B.A. communications), when he spotted it in the glossy pages of The Robb Report. And he didn’t look away when he noted the portrait of the naked woman with an 88-carat moonstone, diamond and 18-karat gold necklace casually draped over her shoulder.
Such over-the-top images decorate page after page of The Robb Report. Since January, the Fullerton alumnus has been the publication’s art director, enjoying the challenge of designing rich editorial layouts for the monthly Malibu-based magazine dedicated to luxurious living. Madrid, however, is pleased to note that he brings more than artistic knowledge to his job.
“My degree has helped prepare me for work in publishing more than I expected,” he says. “Having a background as a writer, journalist and researcher has given me an edge in my work.
“Many layout artists and designers do not understand the effort writers put into a story,” he adds. “My writing background has given me that understanding, allowing me to help bridge the gap between art and editorial.”
The Robb Report bills itself as the ultimate authority on wealthy lifestyles and luxurious living. The magazine contains a blend of editorial and photography on automobiles, yachting, private aviation, real estate, fashion, jewelry, travel and Epicurean life.
Madrid was barely on the job when he was asked to assist with the cover of the March 2003 issue. The creative designer was having trouble selecting the cover photo for that issue’s “Top 10 New Resorts,” and Madrid was asked to view transparencies and make suggestions. Ultimately, they selected the cover he created. For that same issue, he also designed the men’s fashion and style section.
Producing a high-quality product is satisfying, Madrid says. “If a publication hits the right spot for audiences, they will pay to read it.”
