When it came to select a new piano for the Performing Arts Center, it was determined that not just any instrument would do. "I was anxious to have a German Steinway to complement the American Steinway we already have on campus," said Dr. Robert Watson, associate professor of music and keyboard area coordinator. "Going directly to the factory, you have several to choose from, so that we can find the best instrument possible." The university decided to send Watson to the source.
But he was determined not to go by himself. He was assisted by a piano technician. The two men looked at six Steinway pianos, playing them one by one and selecting two final choices. A German quality control technician helped them make their final selection.
"It had been my goal to see a really fine concert instrument brought here. It would be a crime to have a brand new hall and not fit it with the best instrument possible," Watson said. |
