Competing atop a personable pachyderm named Capt. Hook, mahout (rider) Remesh Mehra was a winner for Orange Coast College in the First Intercollegiate Race in Human History held on campus on May 11, 1962.

Mahout Mehra's Capt. Hook was one of 15 entries from universities and colleges throughout the country, including the other sweepstakes winner, Sonita, entered by Harvard University. The elephant races - held on Day of the Titan - are credited with first associating the Titan name with the elephant mascot.
