Front-page stories in many newspapers and features in several magazines resulted from the heavy media coverage. Newsweek called the race "...the season's zaniest manifestation in many a May." Sports Illustrated dubbed it "The Run for the Peanuts" and carried a two-page centerfold photograph of the Harvard elephant.
Media coverage put the small campus on
the map, and the events brought the students and
faculty together. "It was the most incredible thing
in the world," recalls Jack Hale '62 (B.A. business
administration), who rode Orange County State
College's elephant and helped organize the competition.
"We were nobody before the elephant races.
Nobody thought we could do it. We wanted to put
the name on the map. And we did it!" ![]()
