Titans have a remarkable array of favorite instructors, spanning all majors and specialties. A total of 68 different professors were named as favorite instructors, and six received multiple votes. Choudhury M. Shamim, associate professor of political science; Ron Rietveld, professor of history; Ken Ravizza, professor of kinesiology and health science; Elliott Kushell, professor of management; Mark Runno, professor of chid and adolescent studies; and Wendell Crow, chair and professor of communications, were each selected by more than one Titan as outstanding teachers.
"I am honored that some students would select me," said Kushell, when contacted about his selection as a favorite instructor, "I am very lucky to have the opportunity to do what I do, and to be able to interact with and teach a dynamic group of students each semester."
Shamim said his selection was an honor he cherished more than the review of his peer professors. "There is no greater joy than to be appreciated by those to whom you seek to impart knowledge," he said.
Favorite performers were all over the map, including the Titan Men's Chorus and the Cherry Poppin' Daddys. Voters like the Jazz Ensemble and "everyone in the Performing Arts Department." But the most votes went to No Doubt, whose members performed here twice in the 1990s, and Tuffy Titan, who makes appearances at various sporting events.
Individuals responding to the survey voted themselves the most interesting person they've met at Cal State Fullerton, followed by President Milton A. Gordon and Curly, the late wheelchair-bound Christian evangelist who used to stop students en route to the Titan Student Union and preach to them.
Favorite Athletes Favorite athletes area basketball players Bobby Brown, and the entire Titan baseball team. Basketball players Leon Wood and Cedric Ceballos both received multiple votes, as did baseball player Mark Kotsay and Phil Nevin. Interestingly, non-athlete Kevin Costner–who nevertheless portrayed an athlete in several films–also received multiple votes.
Titans have a crush on all kinds of instructors. "There was this one Bio 101 teacher," one respondent wrote. "She was hot. I forget her name. She had glasses, though…" Another wrote that he had a crush on "a T.A. in a research class." Nine different professors were named as the object of more than one student's affection: Vipin Agrawal, assistant professor of finance; Matthew Kirby, assistant professor of geological science; Kurt MacKenzie, associate professor of theatre and dance; Robert A. McLain, assistant professor of history; Vincent Merrill, asssistant professor of kinesiology and health science; Guillermo J. Noffal, associate professor of kinesiology and health science; Debra Rose, professor of kinesiology and health science, and Stephen R. Walk, asssociate professor of kinesiology and health science.
"I'm shocked," Kitselman said, when informed that student shad crushes on him. "My wife will be amused."
"Maybe this will make my courses more popular," said Kirby. "We're always trying to recruit in the geological sciences, so whatever it takes…"
